| Post subject: Does Drew |
Does Drew really enjoy being Gaby when he allows himself to be her so much or is it something he has to be whether he wants to or not? your toni always with love, caring and friendship always- thanks and hugs |

In the past, Drew has stated that once he gets into role as Gaby, he doesn't pay any attention to it, and doesn't mind it. He hated being forced or tricked into it. He really was not happy that he had to spend his time in America as Gaby, but then he just got into role and let it go. He is not happy with the changes to his body, and really doesn't want to be a girl. |

Drew wants to be a typical boy, not a boy that gets mistaken for a girl. And he at times will chose to be Gaby, but hates being forced |

We must remember that Drew half the time, has been instrumental in becoming Gaby either by NOT packing any spare clothes, thusly having to borrow from others. or those breast forms get stuck on him and has no solvent. |

I think it has been amply demonstrated that the missing solvent is usually Maddy's doing. As for the lack of spare clothes, yeah, you'd think he would have learned by now. But Drew gets so involved in his racing that other, more mundane things aren't even on his radar. I would think by now that dad would have started double-checking what Drew packs.

hi- from what i can tell from these stories Drew is a boy who enjoys both sides of his life- being himself or being Gaby. The one thing - make that two things i like about Drew is he reminds me of how i would want to be if i was in his place- and that he really cares. That was one reason i love Astroboy, Goku, Gohan, Kal-el, Bruce Wayne, Ranma, Naruto, Peter and Usagi- was that they cared about other people. your toni always praying everyone the very best possible always.
I ALSO love how Drew has both his mom and dad and a sweet sister- his sister is sweet is she not - giggles?
Forgot he also has mischievious girl friends - that is so cute and sweet, making sure he does not forget about Gaby- giggles |

(First post - discovered Gaby about a week ago and was instantly hooked! Initially started reading on Stardustr.us, then I discovered the old MB site [asstr.org/~Maddy_Bell - it still exists!], then the current one [maddybell.com], and somewhere along the way I stumbled upon Gabyzone!)
To expand on what others have said...
Having read as far as the first few chapters of Book 3, I have to say one of the biggest strengths of the story is Drew's internal dilemma (followed by the two cycling sub-plots, then the outline of the rest of his life - so helping develop a complete rounded picture of him).
One the one hand, he's a boy, so naturally prefers to dress / act like a boy (e.g. hates shopping!)
On the other hand, he's becoming increasingly confident with the Gaby side of his life - and no matter how many times he categorically states that he's never going to be Gaby again, as several characters have already worked out, within a few weeks (for them, chapters for us) she'll be back (allegedly for the very last time - again!)
However, he unsurprisingly prefers each side to have clearly defined boundaries.
He doesn't like being mistaken for Gaby when in Drew mode (which happens pretty much every time he's out with the girls!), is still embarrassed when having to be Gaby longer than intended (usually because he's left the bottle of remover at Maddy's - if only they'd bought 2 when replacing the broken one ) or when having to dress partially as Gaby (usually when he's forgotten a spare set of clothes, and his existing set get wet / muddy) - and he still has to think twice when people talk about Drew when he's Gaby, or Gaby when he's Drew!
At least (I think!) he's down to Gaby as his only girl alias, as opposed to Dee or Drew (Barrymore).
It'll be interesting to see how things turn out in the remaining 3 7/8 books (or more, should MB have enough storylines to consider going beyond book 6!) - an interesting recent development has been the thoughts of the shop assistant when Drew was buying Maddy's present (...I thought he was a girl...) and Miss Bell (...if Drew's really a boy he doesn't make a very good one...), adding to Mr. Wood as the only three adults outside Drew's friend circle to have "rumbled" him.
Aside: interesting how Mr. Wood rumbled Drew at the fancy dress disco - given that none of the other pupils (and presumably staff) noticed...
Thinking of which, Drew's Sports Day plan was certainly a cunning strategy to avoid being 'rumbled' - although with all the effort that entailed, I think Drew's unlikely to turn up to school as Gaby again, as it would be hard to pull of the same ruse (Drew and Gaby appearing to be at school simultaneously!) again!
I suppose there have been vague clues in the books that could allude to differences between Drew and most males - apart from not entering puberty yet, the fact the majority of his friend circle are girls suggests that he finds it slightly easier to empathise/relate to/get on with girls than boys (then again, it's already been said that his cycling isn't regarded as very macho - so it may not be entirely 'nature'), and his very small foot size (shoe shop / ice rink) - although they could be mere coincidence!
As for the similarity in appearance with Maddy, that's probably more a lucky fluke than 'raw' Genetics (Drew's GG Grandmother would have about 1/16 of his DNA, presumably she was Maddy's GGG Aunt, so the common ancestor [Drew's GGG Gran] has about 1/32 of their DNA - see Wikipedia's "cousin" table to help demystify distant relation terminology)
-oOo-
I've seen several comments about turning Gaby's story into a film. While I agree with the concept, personally I think Warner Bros. (who did HP) or an independent studio would be more likely to be faithful to the storyline than Disney - although inevitably a lot of the bike stuff would have to be dropped (or reduced to a few brief flashes of the race, cut to a few seconds worth of receiving his time). A TV series would probably fit the format better, but finding the money to finance it and the networks to show it could be problematic...
And with both, casting Drew could be "interesting" - due to the uniqueness of Drew, they might have to use several actors... |

Just got up to Gaby 101 (like the intro - "embarking on a course...chance of addiction"!)
Oh what a tangled web we weave - it seems as though Drew's life gets more complicated by the chapter.
As if strangers mistaking him for a girl when in Drew mode wasn't bad enough, he's now got Britney & co. convinced he's a girl pretending (very badly) to be a boy, not to mention the convenient plot device of his luggage going astray at the airport for the bike show visit...
...oh, and finding out he's not the only reluctant "girl" in town...
No doubt things will get even more complicated as I read on... |
